Knock Yourself Out / Filigar at SXSW + FREE ALBUM

Words // Scott Pingeton

Bands like Chicago's Filligar are a dying breed.  In a world of soulless buzz bands and overhyped hyphenated micro-genres, Filligar just fucking rocks.  Plain and simple.  They write from the heart and perform with a wild instensity, that's earned them a reputation as one of the country's best live bands.  I witnessed their live show for the first time during SXSW, and was pretty much knocked on my ass in a blaze of screaming guitars, pounding drums and roadhouse piano.

The band's excllent 2010 album The Nerve has been nominated for an Independent Music Award and to celebrate, they're giving it away for free (or whatever price you choose to pay).  Seriously, there's no reason not to do this immediately.  Here's everything you need...

And in case you need any convincing, here's a video of "Knock Yourself Out" from the Outlaw Roadshow in Austin:

New music: Filligar - Knock Yourself Out

Words // Scott Pingeton

If you're a regular reader of Visible Voice, you know that most of the music I gravitate towards includes elements of folk, garage rock and soul.  Filligar incorporates all three into their sound, so it's no surprise that the young Chicago band is high on my list of artists to keep an eye on.  2010's The Nerve is a solid introduction, but nothing grabs me as much as "Knock Yourself Out", the band's new single.  The song quickly finds a groove that pulses with latent energy before exploding in a barrage of guitar and pounding E Street piano.  The song races to a frenzied climax leaving the listener breathlessly groping for the "Repeat" button.  The B-side owes more than a little to classic rock-via-Titus Andronicus, but it's another good listen.  Check them both out here...
